LIGHTS OF JOY
Our committed staff members are trained to handle anything, even under pressure. They are committed to providing the best quality of life for each of our residents and the long-standing mission of St. Joseph’s Home.
HELD BY LOVE
In the spirit of Saint Joseph we always provide an abundance of LOVE.
St. Joseph’s Home has several options for residents when it comes to primary care providers who will care for their needs while they are here.
Dr. Sharon Lee is St. Joseph’s Medical Director. As a medical director, she makes rounds at least twice a month, and comes with extensive experiences working with the elderly and welcomes new patients coming into our home. Dr. Lee is affiliated with St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, the fourth largest medical center in Illinois and Central Illinois’ only Level 1 trauma center and tertiary care medical center.
Our other physicians include Dr. Timothy Lawless of Unity Point Healthcare Systems. Regionally there are two Unity Point hospitals, Unity Point Health Methodist and Unity Point Health Proctor, both located in Peoria. In addition to Dr. Lawless, Dr. Thaw Tun, who is affiliated with St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley also makes rounds at St. Joseph’s Home. Both of these physicians perform routine check-ups on their patients every 30-60 days and as needed.
Residents who would like to continue to see their primary care physician can request that specific physician be notified of their placement at St. Joseph’s Home and it is then up to that physician to decide whether he or she will accept the resident as a patient in our home. All residents will have an assigned PCP during their stay with us.
Along with our associated physicians, a state-licensed podiatrist also makes rounds quarterly at St. Joseph’s Home.
The health and medical needs of our residents are of primary importance to us. Experienced, individualized nursing services are provided 24-hours a day, seven days a week. Our nursing staff consists of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants.
The nursing staff is responsible for the personal and nursing care of our residents. This includes medications and treatments as ordered by the resident’s attending physician. We also provide assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming, hygiene, feeding and ambulation.
Our goal is to help our residents remain as functional and independent as possible; thus residents are encouraged to do as much as they are able to for themselves. Residents are placed on restorative programs which allow staff to continue necessary therapy exercises in daily activities, such as our Walk-to-Dine program.
Having our residents push themselves in a matter to make them stronger and stay independent longer is the overall goal our restorative program, which is coordinated with our Restorative Nurse and our Therapy Staff.
St. Joseph’s Home offers in-house Physical, Occupational and Speech therapy. You’ll receive comprehensive rehabilitation in our fully equipped therapy gym along with the skilled nursing services necessary to recover from surgical procedures, injuries that require orthopedic care or acute illness.
What sets us apart? We provide a comprehensive team approach in an encouraging atmosphere, which means our patients work closely with doctors and nurses, as well as physical, occupational and speech therapists, psychologists, dieticians and geriatric specialists. Our experienced team of therapists will develop your individual plan of care which may include:
Increases strength, ambulation, balance, as well as gait training and transfer techniques.
Targets activities of daily living (dressing, grooming, hygiene, etc.), community reintegration skills, training in fine motor skills, splinting and positioning.

Under the direct supervision of our Certified Food Service staff and with the assistance of a registered dietitian, we provide three well-balanced meals for our residents each day. In addition to these meals, we also provide snacks and beverages. Special physician ordered diets are provided for those residents who require them.
St. Joseph’s Home has three dining rooms tailored to specific needs of our varying residents. As residents age and their needs continue to change, residents who require assistance to feed themselves receive individualized attention in a dignified manner in a dining area suited to their needs.
Family and friends are welcome to join their loved one for a meal with advance notice to the charge nurse or receptionist as well as the dietary staff. The cost for this meal is $3.50 per person.
Residents are permitted to have snacks in their room as long as they follow the guidelines of their physician-ordered diet and are kept in a covered, sealable container.
Social Service Department

Just as watching a sunset can be an uplifting experience for the soul, so, too, our residents can enjoy their “sunset years” and draw close to the warmth of daily fellowship. Our residents’ activities are designed to not only entertain, but to promote positive social interaction for a well-rounded healthy life.
A wide range of activities designed to offer our residents opportunities to socialize, recreate, exercise and interact with others. A calendar of monthly events is posted in each resident room as well as on each wing. Activities for the day are posted by the nurse’s stations.
We encourage residents, families and volunteers to offer suggestions for events to include in our calendar. Volunteers who enjoy interacting with elders are encouraged to participate in our activity programs. Sharing special talents such as music, crafts and travel experiences are always enjoyed and appreciated.
Laundry and Housekeeping Services
Laundry is provided with the cost of your room. Family does have the option to do their own laundry if they choose to. We ask that you have a hamper, laundry basket, etc., to place soiled clothes in, and that you come every couple of days to pick up in order to maintain a sanitary and odor-free environment. We use iron-on labels to mark all resident’s clothing regardless of whether the family chooses to do laundry. Personal clothing is distributed daily to residents’ rooms by our laundry staff.
Housekeeping services are provided seven days a week. This ensures the facility as a whole is kept clean and sanitary and that our state guidelines are maintained. Residents rooms are thoroughly cleaned five times a week and beds are made daily by staff members. We strive to keep our facility clean and safe for our residents, visitors and staff.
Beauty and Barber Shop
At St. Joseph’s Home, we’re blessed to have an in-house Beauty Shop. With licensed cosmetologists who work Tuesdays and Thursdays for our residents, you or your loved one will never have to worry about a bad hairdo.
Beauty Shop services include hair wash and sets, permanents and haircuts.
Our local barber from here in Lacon stops in approximately every 6 weeks to care for our male residents’ grooming needs as well.
Certified Nursing Assistants include daily shaving as part of a resident’s daily personal hygiene tasks.
St. Joseph’s Home is a secure, freestanding building. All entrances to the building are locked with the exception of the main entrance, which is unlocked and visible by staff between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
For those residents who suffer from various forms of dementia and may be at risk for elopement, we employ the ‘Wanderguard’.
An electronic bracelet is secured to your loved one or their wheelchair/walker. When an exit is attempted, the Wanderguard system lets out a series of alarms and the door will automatically lock for 15 seconds, ensuring that staff members can intervene.
In the event of a fire or other disaster, fire alarms over-ride the Wanderguard system to ensure the safety of all residents.
